How to kill weeds in your garden lawn – gardening tips

by YAR

Gardening expert Suzanne Hall of LoveTheGarden has shared how to control weeds in gardens. LoveTheGarden offers gardening tips and products and is home to Miracle-Gro, Levington, Tomorite and many other brands. The gardening expert said that if a lawn has moss or weeds, then gardeners can use a “combination product of fertilizer and the appropriate herbicide.”

Suzanne continued: “For weed control, it’s important to recognize that it takes time to work, often at least a month.

“Then once the plant is dead, it can be safely removed and the patches can be over-seeded.

“Most selective turfgrass herbicides contain hormones that are designed to kill weeds by disrupting their metabolism.

“In the process, the herbicide breaks down and any landings on the ground are also destroyed.

However, Suzanne said it is “important” to keep weeds “at bay” to maintain a good quality lawn.

While lawn moss may not seem like much of a problem, a mossy lawn can actually get weeds.

The landscape professional explained: “Weeds cannot compete with healthy growing grass, but if the grass becomes mossy, the weed seeds are specially adapted to penetrate deep into the moss and will germinate in the water they contain. .

“Once the weeds take hold, they have trouble growing because the grass absorbs more than the weeds.

“So most weeds have a taproot to get deeper water which, if you try to dig out, will leave some in the ground and it will grow back into a new weed.

“Once the weeds get established, they will shade the grass and deprive it of light.

“Without our help, the weeds always win.”

Another way to keep weeds at bay is to fertilize your lawn regularly.

Fertilizers should be applied in the spring, summer and fall and when the lawn has been under stress, for example after a drought.

Gardeners must remember to follow the exact application rate when applying fertilizer.

“Too little and you’ll get shallow growth, too much will burn your lawn,” he added.

The fertilizer allows the grass to grow strong and maintain good impact resistance.

Fertilizer can also help the color of your lawn look even and consistent.
